Atlanta United Take the MLS Cup

Just two years in the making, Atlanta United wins its first MLS cup as they stun the Portland Timbers with a 2-0 win. The shocking 73,019 fans witnessed their team ride their sophomore season to make history as the youngest team to win an MLS cup. Along with the players quick ride onto the throne, Atlanta has now shifted into a modern-day American soccer town. The highly anticipated match up took place during prime-time television at 8:30 PM EST. There were a little over 2 million people watching the game at its peak. This is big news as Major League Soccer is building more momentum as popularity gains in the United States. With 2 million people watching, the battle rose to excitement early with fast paced counterattacks, but it was not until the 39th minute when Venezuela’s Josef Martínez, the league’s MVP, darted towards a sloppy ball at the perimeter of the Timbers penalty and easily slipped the ball past the Timbers goalkeeper Jeff Attinella for the first goal of the night. The second was set up by a flick from Martínez to defender Franco Escobar who dove with his left leg to secure the final and winning goal. Now Atlanta, Georgia, a soccer town has its soccer title.
